Electric motor research

We are a university research project pursuing to commercialize a novel electric motor concept. The motor has an integrated two-speed gearbox in a compact design: the 40-kW / 3600 Nm prototype fits inside a tractor's front wheel. The concept is mainly intended for heavy duty usage, such as agricultural equipment, forestry, construction etc.

We are located in Lappeenranta, Finland. The project is a joint effort of Lappeenranta University of Technology and Saimaa University of Applied Sciences. Our interdisciplinary group combines mechanical and electrical engineering, and business expertise.

In this phase of the project, we are looking for development partners and investors to start business with.

Integrated electric motor and 2-speed gearbox

What we offer

A novel traction motor concept, combining a traction motor with a two-speed gearbox that is built completely inside the rotating parts of the motor. The gearbox is purpose-built and designed for electric motor applications, so it does not have friction clutches (because electric motor can synchronize speeds during shifting) and the whole shifting process is fully electric as well.

40-kW prototype of the concept has been very promising in terms of efficiency and performance.

Simulation tool for dimensioning hybrid electric drivetrains is also in the works.

What we are looking for

Investors and partners, mainly. We intend to found a start-up company around this concept, for which we'll have to yet do some research and find interested companies and people.
